All Our Yesterdays: Town topics in march including theatre trips in Hunstanton, King’s Lynn cheque presentations and Downham Market St Winnold’s Day parade
In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature we look back through the pages of old editions of the Lynn News for good memories…
March 2016: A colourful display of daffodils admired by pupils from Greyfriars Primary School in Lynn, before they get ready to plant several large buckets of bluebells behind the Red Mount Chapel in Lynn Walks.
March 2016: Trips to the Princess Theatre, Walpole St Peter’s Flower Festival and a fish and chip supper are being planned by Hunstanton’s Day Centre and the Dersingham-based Phobbies Group, thanks to the generosity of Hunstanton Community Choir. Cash was collected by members each week in a charities fund and cheques for £500 each were handed over by chorister Judy Robinson to representatives of the two groups.
March 2016: This was the cheque presentation of funds raised from the sale of Spitfires from the 2015 Spitfire Trail in Lynn. From left are: Mary Dunn (East Anglian Air Ambulance ) Flt Pauline Petch (42F King’s Lynn) Bob Sinclair and Mike Lister. A total of £3,000 was raised and split between the Royal Air Forces Association, Walking with the Wounded, East Anglian Air Ambulance and 42F King’s Lynn Squadron ATC.
March 2016: West Norfolk was deluged with heavy rain falling without a break over several hours, leading to some localised flooding. Firefighters had to pump out excess surface water at the junction of Purfleet Street and King Street in Lynn. The next morning there was still a reasonable-sized lake at The Walks.
March 2018: There were fears that the annual May concert in 2018 would be the last for King’s Lynn Male Voice Choir, with an urgent SOS (Save Our Singers) launched in a last-ditch effort to attract new and younger singers. This picture was taken under happier circumstances during the Choir’s Diamond Jubilee Concert at St Nicholas’Chapel, King’s Lynn.
March 2014: Meet the staff at Rosedale Children’s Home on Goodwins Road, Lynn who were preparing for a series of fundraisers including skydives, runs and other charity events to help pay for children to go on holiday to Florida.
March 2012:The St Winnold’s day parade on its way through Downham to the town hall. ‘Bernard’ a Suffolk Punch from Church Farm, Stow Bardolph, heads the parade with Belle (white) and Blue from riding for the disabled, Wallington Hall.
March 2018: This was the launch of West Norfolk Wins Lottery at the Council Chamber, with West Norfolk Mayor Carol Bower. The game, called West Norfolk Wins, was a council-developed initiative to help charities and community groups raise more funds to support their own work.
March 2019: Children at Swaffham VC Infant and Nursery School created dinosaur fossils from clay which went into a display cabinet in the foyer of Swaffham Heritage Museum. In this picture, Mouse Class pupils and staff are pictured with the display.
March 2019: Pupils from North Wootton Academy had the chance to step back in time when they visited the Victorian School at Great Cressingham, having handwriting practice on slates, repeating timetables and playing Victorian games.
