Eat My Words: Good food and a lovely, festive feel at Jacks, of Woodlakes, Stowbridge

I first tried Jacks as a takeaway service during lockdown, and although not remembering exactly what it was like, I do recall feeling it was a treat when there wasn’t access to restaurants.

Since then, I’ve returned a handful of times, and me and my boyfriend made the
decision one Saturday evening before the kick off of the England’s quarter final against France to head to Jacks for dinner.

On arrival, the outside of the restaurant was lit beautifully in time for Christmas with an archway of golden lights, which made us both feel very festive. We were greeted by the owner, Jack, who showed us to a table and is always chatty and polite.

Me and my partner Tom both opted for a diet coke to drink, which came out very quickly.

It then came to the time to decide what to have to eat.

Jacks has a really good menu and I found it really difficult to decide what to have, simply because there were so many good choices.

They also currently have a Christmas menu with options to have two (£24.95) or three (£29.95) courses. There were also good options on this too, but we decided to stick to the ordinary menu.

I went for the chicken soulaki (£14.95) which was served in a pitta bread alongside fries, side salad and tzatziki, and Tom had the ale battered cod fillet (£13.95) which came with skin on fries, peas and tartare sauce.

I have to say, I did get a bit of ‘food envy’ when I saw Tom’s fish and chips. The fish looked crispy, golden and delicious – he soon confirmed that it was all of the above.

However, the food envy soon disappeared when I had my own. The chicken was
really tasty, hot and was perfect alongside the tzatziki.

Our fries were also tip top and super crispy.

After polishing off our dishes, we were greeted by Jack again who we chatted to.

The service was really friendly and couldn’t be faulted, the service helped towards a really good atmosphere and Jack made the experience feel personal.

The portions were quite big and we didn’t quite have enough room for dessert,
although we both liked the look at the options available.

It was good value for money and we really enjoyed our evening before heading home to watch the match.

It’s also the perfect place to go for a Christmas get together during the festive season.

Food: Hot, delicious food and was great value for money *****

Drink: Not much to say about a diet coke, but the drinks menu looked good and I would have had a cocktail if I wasn’t driving *****

Staff: Really friendly and Jack’s a great host *****

Price: I’d say it was good value for money as the portions were quite big ****

Decor: Looked great inside and out for Christmas and had lots of finishing touches *****
