Lynn News Beake Speaks column focuses on pancake day
I heard something today that made me realise spring is on its way. The sound of birdsong and it was light as I left the office. It has been a long winter and though I love the season we are all ready for some sun and warmth I am sure.
I have decided to give up puns for Lent. No puns here, not even on pancake day. Nope, my pun lips are sealed. It will be harder than giving up chocolate but I am determined.
It has been a fun week, getting involved with a pancake race in the town centre organised by Discover King’s Lynn. Teams from the town took part in the games with gusto, me included. I got a little bit loud and competitive but it was so much fun.
It was a good way to connect and meet people and as we all know, that is what us humans like to do. A positive thing for our mental health.
Speaking of which, I wish people luck who are taking part in the Priory Rotary Swimarathon this weekend. Swimming is a good exercise for mental health. I am not a strong swimmer, though I have treated myself and a friend to a swim and afternoon tea as per the offer at Hunstanton Pool Hire.
It will be a case of sink or swim. Will I eat the scones before the swim or after and which way round will I put the cream and jam. This was a great topic of debate the other night at a meal out. It is a highly contentious subject. Cream first and jam second, some people argued. But they are missing the point totally and a vital ingredient. Butter, of course. It is butter, then jam, then cream. The end.
Now that spring is springing, hopefully I will be able to get my gardening gloves on and do a bit of planting. These things, as we learnt from the pandemic, are good for us. Such as doing a jigsaw puzzle. I like the idea of it but getting round to it is another matter totally.
Festivals are coming up in conversation at the moment and usually we would go to Latitude on the motorbike but it sadly clashes with a pre-arranged holiday.
I enjoy a festival but only if I can stay in a hotel.
So giving up the puns. It will be harder than giving up chocolate for Lent, but I will do my best to reach the end of this article not mentioning anything about pancake day.
Let’s hope it’s flippin’ worth it and that I don’t fall at the first curdle or end up with egg on my face or batter you with eggselent puns that will crack you up.
Un oeuf is un oeuf.
