Memory Lane schooldays: England memento for young footballers

Pupils at St James Boys’ School in Lynn were delighted when they were showered with football mementoes during a school assembly in late January, 1989.

Our Lynn News picture shows Mr Noel Watkin, a retired headmaster from the Isle of Wight, presenting members of the school football team with an England pennant signed by the manager, Bobby Robson.

England stickers and photographs and Arsenal booklets were handed out to the young players.

Mr Watkin made the gift because he was so impressed with the boys’ football knowledge when he was guest speaker at a school assembly in 1988. Mr Watkin had been working as a relief teacher at St James.
