King’s Lynn steam engine Gazelle built 1893 by Alfred Dodman & Co for William Burkitt

In this painting from 1980, artist Ivan Lilley, has depicted an imagined scene of a little steam engine called “Gazelle” built in 1893 in Lynn by Alfred Dodman & Co for William Burkitt.

It cost just £250.

Burkitt had the right to run it on the Midland and Great Northern line for business trips as a seed and corn dealer.

“Gazelle” was one of the smallest steam locomotives built to the standard rail gauge and the only one to be built in Norfolk.
