Memory Lane schooldays: Pupils get knitting in the classroom

Pupils at Smithdon High School in Hunstanton spent time in March, 1979, taking part in three sponsored knit-in sessions in aid of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council for Research.

They produced squares which would be made into blankets which would be raffled - and the proceeds added to the money raised from the knit-ins.

About 70 students and members of staff took part, including one boy pupil and several male teachers.

One of the organisers, Miss Anne Lewis, said it was the International Year of the Child project which sparked the idea off and the venture was part of a national sponsored knit-in.

Co-organiser of the fundraiser with Miss Lewis was Mrs Elaine Mannering.
