Downham High School rugby players raised £620 for charity in 1997

Downham High School rugby players raised £620 for Support Paraplegics in Rugby Enterprise (SPIRE) during a sponsored goalkicking competition.

Pictured here, in February 1997, the cheque is presented by rugby teacher Dave Fairbairn-Day (left) and head teacher Ian Gartshore (second from right) to the charity’s John Motum (2nd from left); also pictured is Parent Teacher Association chairman Gill Taylor.

The competition was held just before Christmas when players from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 took part, each having ten kicks to raise cash.

Originally it had been planned to buy new rugby kit, but the PTA stepped in with £400 which meant the sponsored money could go to SPIRE.
