Cheshire and Oldfield bed specialist in Dersingham to close after just seven months
A boutique bed specialist is set to close down after just seven months of trading due to rising costs.
It is with “heartfelt sadness” that the Cheshire and Oldfield team has announced the closure of its Dersingham business, located at St Nicholas’ Court.
It will officially shut down on Saturday, May 3 following a “short but memorable chapter” in North West Norfolk's retail scene.
Founded by Harry Oldfield, Cheshire and Oldfield was named in tribute to his great aunt Sylvia Cheshire and great-grandmother Ivy May. It opened in October last year with high hopes.
Despite early excitement and a warm response from customers, the store has struggled to navigate the challenging retail environment, citing rising operational costs and reduced footfall since December as the key reasons behind the difficult decision to close.
“It’s incredibly hard to close the doors on something that means so much to me,” Mr Oldfield said.
“This store was more than just a business - it was a passion project shaped by years of planning, personal savings, and my family's commitment to doing things properly.
“But the significantly low footfall and economic realities have caught up with us, and it’s no longer sustainable.”
To mark its final weeks, Cheshire and Oldfield will host a closing down sale. Customers can shop a wide range of ex-display beds, mattresses, and accessories at up to 75% discounts.
“While this chapter is coming to an end, I remain incredibly proud of what we built in Dersingham,” Mr Oldfield added.
“The values that guided Cheshire and Oldfield aren’t going anywhere. I’m taking time now to reflect and explore new possibilities for the future - perhaps in a different form, but with the same heart.”
Cheshire and Oldfield has extended its “sincere thanks to its loyal customers, supporters, and the local community, who welcomed the store with such warmth and enthusiasm”.
