New CCTV cameras to be installed at public toilets in Swaffham after damage

More CCTV cameras are set to be installed at public toilets around Swaffham after they have repeatedly been vandalised.

At the council’s full meeting that took place last Wednesday, town clerk Helen Carrier told councillors that despite CCTV cameras being installed at public toilets in town, they were vandalised by teenagers within 24 hours.

Breckland Council had the original cameras installed but it was proposed that Swaffham Town Council should replace the damaged cameras with ones protected by a metal cage.

“Police are looking into who did this,” Ms Carrier said.

“We need to install cameras ourselves or close the toilets because it is costing a lot of money.”

Cllr Caroline Ellerbeck argued that the public toilets should be kept open.

She said: “For us disabled people, we need these toilets.”

Deputy Mayor Lindsey Beech added: “Closing the toilets should be the last option here.”

All councillors voted in favour of purchasing two new cameras to be installed at the toilets.
