Downham Market Rotary Club’s Burns Night entertains dozens of guests in celebration of Scottish national poet Robert Burns at Ryston Golf Club
Dancing, singing, food and poetry all formed part of Downham Market Rotary Club’s Burns Night as a tribute to Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns this week.
More than 50 members of the club, family members and friends enjoyed the event delivered by Rotarian George Morton at Ryston Golf Club on Monday.
George welcomed the guests before Ewan Meacham brought in the haggis to the tune ‘Scotland the Brave’ and, after George had addressed the haggis, Elizabeth Jarred and Peg Hunter performed some lively Scottish dancing.
The eighth Downham Market Rotary Club Burns Night also saw George give the Selkirk Grace, followed by a traditional three-course meal prepared by the golf club caterers.
The ‘toast to the lassies’ was delivered by Mike Westman, with a response from Kate Faro-Wood.
The club’s “two resident Scottish men” George and Ewan brought the evening to a close with The Immortal Memory, reviewing Burns’ life with a modern twist and a quiz, before guests concluded the night with Auld Lang Syne.
Rotarian Martin Chilvers said: “Our grateful thanks to George for his impressive organisation and sterling efforts in assembling such a team of wide-ranging gifts to lift spirits once again.”
