Downham Market man in court after sticking middle finger up to police

A rude hand gesture to police landed a Downham man with a £239 court bill.

Officers were driving in the town’s Bridge Street just before midnight when they came across drunken Adam Kenna in the road.

The 21-year-old walked in front of the moving police van, Lynn magistrates were told on Thursday.

“They asked him to get out of the road,” said prosecutor Denise Holland. “Unfortunately Mr Kenna stuck his middle finger up.

“They stopped and he started to run away. He was stopped by the officers and started shouting at them.”

Mrs Holland said Kenna, who pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in the incident on May 28, had a previous conviction for the same offence in 2018, otherwise the matter might not have made it to court.

Kenna, of Bexwell Road, apologised to the court, adding: “I can’t explain why I did it.”

He was fined £100 and ordered to pay £105 costs plus a £34 victim surcharge.
