Downham Market Festival cake on display

This year's Downham Festival cake made by mother and daughter Carol and Claire Goodrum is now proudly on display at their High Street shop Cream Me Up Scotty.

The cake has more than 80 eggs in it, over 23lbs of mixed fruit, and has been fed with almost five litres of brandy. Said Carol: "We are extremely pleased with it. This is the third consecutive year we have made the festival cake and it's our favourite so far."

From start to finish the cake, which is 31 inches long, 21 inches wide and 20 inches tall, took two weeks to make. It is based on the festival theme of Around the World.

"I made the cake and Claire decorated it. To reflect a travel theme, it's made to look like a set of suitcases with a camera and photographs showing landmarks around the world," said Carol.

It will be on show at the shop until Saturday, May 26, and on Wednesday, May 30, it will be taken to Downham Town Hall for a coffee morning, when it will be cut up. Any cake left over will be distributed to care homes for the elderly in the local area. Carol and Claire are pictured with their cake creation. MLNF18AF05289
