Drink-driver Jamie Lewis in King’s Lynn court after driving at speed in Gayton

A drink-driver was spotted travelling at dramatically different speeds before being pulled over.

Jamie Lewis, 47, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he admitted driving above the specified alcohol limit.

Prosecutor Anna Crayford told the court that on February 13, police were on patrol in the Gayton area when they saw Lewis driving a Mercedes.

He was initially driving at 50mph, but rapidly increased his speed to 70mph before braking sharply at a corner.

Lewis was then seen driving at 80mph, before slowing down again to 40mph.

Police eventually pulled up alongside Lewis, and noticed that he smelt of alcohol and was “chatty”.

A roadside breath test came back positive, and Lewis was arrested.

He was taken to Lynn’s Police Investigation Centre for further tests, which revealed that he had 52mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg.

In mitigation, solicitor Tiffany Meredith told magistrates that Lewis was travelling to see a friend at the time of his offence.

She said that Lewis had been drinking at home before getting behind the wheel because he was feeling “low” due to “living by himself”.

Ms Meredith added that the defendant felt “intimidated” while being followed by the police.

She said: “He explained to me they were in an unmarked Range Rover when being followed.

“He felt very intimidated - there may have been some anxiety reflected in his driving. He didn’t know it was the police.”

Lewis, of Rottenstone Lane in Ormesby, North Yorkshire, was disqualified from driving for 16 months and fined £120.

He will also pay a £48 victim surcharge and court costs of £85.
