Drink-driver Robert Fenton stopped in Necton was more than three times over the limit when getting into crash
A 41-year-old who was three times the drink-drive limit has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.
It is not the first time that Robert Fenton has been in court for a similar offence. In fact, he has also committed drink-driving offences in 2018 and 2004.
He appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he admitted driving above the specified alcohol limit.
Prosecutor Asif Akram told the court that on November 9, police had stopped the Jaguar XF that Fenton was driving after spotting him driving on the wrong side of the road at excessive speed in Necton.
Another officer also saw Fenton involved in a collision before driving off.
He was stopped and a breath test was carried out which came back with a reading of 115mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg.
A reading this high put Fenton at risk of going to prison.
He appeared unrepresented in court and told magistrates that he has had “drinking problems” for most of his life.
Fenton said: “It was my own fault really. I’ve had drinking problems for most of my life but it is still no excuse and I’m sorry for that.
“I don’t drink every day but when I do, it’s to excess.”
Magistrates, led by John Hare, noted Fenton’s high reading when they disqualified him from driving for four years.
He was also given a 12-month community order which entails completing 100 hours of unpaid work.
Fenton, of Abbey Close, Wendling, near Dereham, will also pay a victim surcharge of £114 and court costs of £85.
