Fincham man Spencer Waldron caught drug-driving in Marham

Police followed a drug-driver who did not think he was over the limit.

Spencer Waldron, of California in Fincham, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he admitted driving above the specified drug limit.

Prosecutor Abdul Khan told the court that on October 4 last year, Waldron had been driving in the Marham area when he noticed he was being followed by a car. This was an unmarked police car.

Officers decided to stop Waldron because he was driving too slowly and failed to turn despite having his indicator on.

Police said that due to Waldron’s “demeanour” and having a red face, a drug swipe was carried out which came back positive for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol - a cannabis breakdown - being in his system.

He had 2.9mcg of the drug in his system, the legal limit to drive 2mcg.

In mitigation, duty solicitor Tiffany Meredith told the court that Waldron had become nervous when he saw he was being followed.

She said: “The police were following him in a blacked out 4x4 vehicle, I’m not sure what they thought he was doing.

“He was slightly nervous because of the car following him. The police also said he had a red face, he naturally just has a red face, I noticed that today.”

Ms Meredith said that Waldron was “hardly over the limit” and that he had some cannabis the night before to help him sleep.

She added that Waldron is “desperate to get back to work” and urged magistrates to give him a lower driving disqualification.

He was banned from getting behind the wheel for 12 months and fined £120.

He will also pay a victim surcharge of £48 and court costs of £45.
