Events, past, present and future

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler takes a look at the West Norfolk arts scene...

Once again there’s no shortage of events, past, present and future to report on, so I’ll get straight on without further delay.

The King’s Lynn Festival Spring Series booklet is now available to pick up locally, detailing events held between February and April. Coffee concerts, films and an exciting entertainment entitled The Dinosaur Department Store are on offer. This event is billed as suitable for ages three to eight and their families, given by cellist Ashok Klounda and narrator Polly Ives, to be presented on Friday, April 5 at Lynn Town Hall, 11am and 1.30pm.

The first Coffee Concert is given by pianist Richard Zhang, includes music by Bach, Beethoven and Faure, and is held at Lynn’s Town Hall on the morning of Friday, February 9, starting at 11am, with coffee and cake available from 10.30am.

Films to be shown at The Alive Cinema, Corn Exchange are: Mad about the Boy: the Noel Coward Story and Chealier- the story of composer Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint- Georges. Details available on the Festival’s website also.

I’m pleased to report a new season of concerts will be held in and around Burnham Market this Spring. The first recital takes place on April 7, 3pm at Burnham Sutton Church, to be given by Leo Popplewell (cello) and Lionel Manciu (violin).

Winter Music Supper Clubs continue in February and March. For further details visit: www.musicintheburnhams.com or ring 07989177079

For opera fans that classic favourite, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, is presented at The Alive Corn Exchange on the evening of Tuesday, February 6, starting at 7.30pm. Sure to be a great performance, so to enjoy a fine operatic experience contact 01553 764864.

If you fancy a complete change from opera and enjoy Sixties music, ‘Hitmakers of the 60s’ may be just for you. Again The Alive Corn Exchange, Lynn is the venue this coming Sunday and there’s a cool programme of hit numbers to enjoy. Book tickets, if still available at kingslynncornexchange.co.uk

More activities for the youngsters now. Once again there will plenty to take part in this February Half Term, which occurs between February 17 and 25. The usual Holiday Clubs, Go Karting, Superhero Skating, Family Climb Time and much more will be held at Lynnsport, St James, Downham, Oasis and Glebe House School Hunstanton. Booking is advisable!

There is a varied selection of classes in theatre, dance and musical theatre designed for all ages and abilities provided by The Place For Performing Arts at 38, New Conduit Street, Vancouver Quarter, Lynn, so if you’re looking for a new challenge why not get in touch with The Place on 01553 277919 or visit theworkshop.org.uk?

My film of the week, released today, is a serious one, entitled The Zone of Interest. It’s subject being the family life of The Commandant of Auschwitz Prisoner of War Camp, who lived next to the prison. It’s based on a novel by Martin Amis, and, of course, will be one which will generate deep feelings, no doubt.

Recently published is historian and broadcaster Bettany Hughes’ fascinating book entitled The Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. I was lucky enough to attend a talk and book signing of her’s recently and can confidently recommend the book to anyone with an interest in what was regarded as the world’s great landmarks.

If you are in the Swaffam area a visit to the museum which contains a superb gallery dedicated to Howard Carter who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in November 1922 is well worth it; another place designed for those with an ancient world interest.

Lastly, a couple of reminders; don’t forget those True’s Talks at Trues Yard Fisherfolk Museum, Thursdays at 1pm. Contact 01553 770479 to book, and there’s still a chance to go and enjoy The West Norfolk Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s production of The Sorcerer tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday. There is a matinee tomorrow afternoon also. Well, there’s a how-dedoo!
