Extra security will be in place for Fakenham Racecourse's biggest meeting of the year next month, but officials insist it is not related to recent trouble at other venues.

Thousands are expected to head to the track for the popular Ladies' Day fixture in just over two weeks' time, on Sunday, June 3.

But, with crowd issues high on the agenda following violence among some racegoers at two high-profile meetings in recent weeks, managers say their plans reflect the larger crowd expected for the event, rather than safety concerns.

Chief executive David Hunter said: "We're constantly reviewing things. We've never had any of those incidents here and we hope we don't in the future.

"We will be engaging more security than we do for a normal race meeting and we'll make sure they are fully briefed.

"There will be a lot of casual racegoers coming. We hope people will come, enjoy themselves and enjoy the racing."

Racing has been left shocked by violent clashes which marred meetings at Goodwood and Ascot over the past two weekends.

As many as 50 people are thought to have been involved in the trouble at Goodwood two weeks ago, which remains the subject of a police investigation.

Other venues have also tightened security arrangements in response to the disorder, which Mr Hunter described as "dreadful."

He added: "The reports I have read have been absolutely appalling.

"I think it's a reflection of society, a very, very small minority, and we hope none of them come here or to any other public gathering."
