Hunstanton man 'can't explain' camera damage, magistrates hear

A civil engineer has admitted causing £552 worth of damage to a security camera belonging to a housing association.

Andrew Jenkins could offer no explanation to police why he damaged the equipment in Hunstanton while drunk.

Prosecutor Pretty Barber told Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday that images from the camera showed Jenkins, 30, looking at it before throwing an item in his hand.

“At which point the camera went blank,” she said, adding that the defendant was later identified from stills.

Jenkins, of Waveney Road, Hunstanton, told police he must have done it but he couldn’t remember.

“He was annoyed with himself as he had turned himself around, got a job and was doing well,” Miss Barber told the court.

In mitigation, solicitor Rob New said it was right that the defendant had improved his life as a previous similar conviction had been eight years ago.

“He can’t for the life of him explain why he behaved in such a way. He recognises it’s unacceptable,” said Mr New.

Jenkins, who pleaded guilty to criminal damage, was ordered to pay £552 compensation and £105 costs.
