Downham Market Scout and Guide hut has makeover with help from Tesco grant and Calor Rural Community Fund and volunteers

A Scout and Guide hut has had a makeover with the help of a number of volunteers, fundraising and grant applications.

The Downham Market Scout and Guide Hut has received assistance from various sources to upgrade the facilities for youngsters in the area.

Emma Smith, who is leading the refurbishment project at Howdale Road, said: “Our aim is to improve facilities for the young people in the local area.

“We have had involvement of Scouts and help received locally and from the committee who manage the hut, Howdale Pax.

“All involved are volunteers, and we would like to appeal for more volunteers across Girlguiding, Scouts and the Howdale Pax committee.”

There has also been help from Downham Rotary Club and Ray Starling, a Rotarian, said: “We were able to help them and it has been one hell of an adventure.

“We were impressed at how well Emma put things forward asking for help.

“Securing the £1,000 Tesco grant meant that it paid for the new drain system.

“There are 200 young kids involved in the club that use the hut , such as Brownies and Rainbows.

“Downham Rotary Club is always, from our point of view, fundraising for local good causes.

“Emma’s work to improve the hut has been an extraordinary story.”

Indeed, Emma has worked hard to gain funding and volunteers to help improve the facilities.

She applied for the Calor Rural Community Fund and was awarded the £5,000 grant. This meant, after some 30 years, the toilets in the hut could be updated with disabled access.

They have also been able to improve their kitchen facilities and made the hut a safer space for use by young people in the area.
