A woman who kicked a police officer has been ordered to pay him compensation.

Zara Hillier assaulted PC Stephen Smith while he was at her house in Hillen Road, South Lynn, town magistrates were told yesterday.

Police had attended in relation to another matter and, while being arrested, Hillier “kicked out” and caught the officer in the chest while he was on a flight of stairs.

The court heard that she apologised afterwards but later went on to verbally abuse the officer, so he didn’t think her apology was sincere. It was accepted that there was no injury.

Hillier, 36, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty on October 16.

Tiffany Meredith, mitigating, said her client did accept that she kicked out in a “reckless” way but maintains the contact was with his leg and it happened outside the property.

Miss Meredith added: “It was a flinching, rather than a deliberate kicking out. She was under the influence of alcohol. I do emphasise that it was a reaction.”

Chairman of the bench, John Hare, told Hillier: “The police are there to help and serve the community.

"Getting assaulted is not part and parcel of their job. Assaults on police officers are not to be taken lightly.”

Hiller was ordered to pay £100 compensation to PC Smith.
