Labour candidate Terry Jermy selected to take on Liz Truss to be South West Norfolk MP
A second candidate has been selected to take on Liz Truss for the seat as MP for South West Norfolk.
Terry Jermy, a businessman from Thetford, is the Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate to tackle the former Prime Minster for her seat, which she has held since 2009. He has been a Breckland councillor since 2008, representing Thetford.
A General Election must be held before January 28, 2025, although one is expected to be called this year.
Mr Jermy is the second person to announce they will fight to oust Ms Truss from her seat, as independent candidate James Bagge – a member of the so-called Turnip Taliban – also launched his own bid for the seat.
Mr Jermy said: “I am delighted to have been selected. I have seen first-hand how South West Norfolk has been taken for granted over many years and is now hungry for change.
“We need a full-time, community-focused MP to address the needs and aspirations of residents. As a local businessman, community champion and from my years as a councillor I understand the area well.
“It’s a clear choice in South West Norfolk between more of the same with Liz Truss, or a change in focus and commitment with myself. I look forward to campaigning across the constituency, listening to residents’ concerns and aspirations and sharing my plans. This election is a chance for change.”
He added: “Not content with crashing the economy, Liz Truss is now hanging out spreading conspiracy theories in America.
“Her priorities are not the needs of people in South West Norfolk. Meanwhile I’ve been working hard to shape difficult council budgets and protect vulnerable residents in our area.”
Mr Jermy runs his own business producing and distributing 13,000 copies of the About Thetford magazine each month.
He’s involved in numerous community groups and charities including the Charles Burrell Centre and Staniforth Trust.
He is currently the vice-chairman of Breckland Council as well as serving as the chairman of the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Commission.
