Fakenham Ladies Day racing draws in big crowd
The boss of Fakenham Racecourse hailed a “fantastic day” for the 2019 Ladies Day meeting and condemned a small fight that broke out at the end as “unacceptable.”
Just under 5,000 spectators were in attendance for the event on Sunday, which was sponsored by Jarrold Department Store.
David Hunter, chief executive of the racecourse, said: “There was exciting racing, no serious spills for horses or jockeys and a really happy crowd.
“The ladies made a great effort and we are very grateful for how they dressed for the occasion.”
Ladies Day has been running for “five or six years” now in its current form.
“A lot of hard work was put in to get it on this year because there has been so much hot weather so we needed to irrigate the ground,” Mr Hunter added.
The one sour note of the day was a fight involving two or three men, which broke out during an evening disco after the races were completed.
Mr Hunter said he was furious about the incident, adding: “There is no room for that at any racecourse in the country, let alone Fakenham.
“It was not a great way to end the day but no-one was hurt at least.
“I will be working with the police and taking the appropriate action.”
