Plans for Lidl supermarket in Swaffham re-emerge as chain looks to demolish former Sequin Arts buildings in Castle Acre Road

Plans for a new supermarket on the outskirts of a town have re-emerged.

Breckland Council has previously refused plans for the demolition of empty warehouses in Swaffham to make way for the town’s first Lidl supermarket.

However, the company has not given up on its hopes for a new store and has submitted a new application relating to the development.

Lidl is seeking to demolish the former Sequin Art buildings in Castle Acre Road to make way for a new branch after naming the town as one of its priority locations for expansion.

The closest Lidl stores to Swaffham are currently in Watton and Dereham, where plans for an even larger branch have recently been given the green light.

However, officials at Breckland Council said the authority had not received sufficient detail about the planned demolition and restoration of the site in Swaffham.

Lidl has made a formal request to the council to assess whether the project will have significant environmental impacts – a step taken by developers to see if an assessment is needed before submitting a full application.
