King's Lynn Dodd Group apprentice takes company's national title
Electrical apprentice Alex Goodman, who works at the Dodd Group's base on Lynn's Hardwick Industrial Estate has been awarded one of the company's top national accolades.
Alex, a second-year apprentice, has been chosen as Electrical Apprentice of the Year from the entire Dodd Group, which employs more than 850 staff. Last week he was presented with his certificate by West Norfolk Mayor Nick Daubney watched by representatives from the Dodd Group and the College of West Anglia, which Alex attends.
Following a hotly contested competition in which managers from Dodd Group’s UK wide business had to nominate their best apprentices and adult trainees, Alex’s mature attitude and commitment made him a standout candidate.
He has successfully completed the first year of his NVQ Level 3 Electro-technical Apprenticeship at Dodd Group’s Lynn branch.
Alex’s supervising electricians and managers have commented on his positive attitude and abilities. He has quickly earned a reputation of being keen to learn and seeks out new work as he completes his allocated tasks.
An early sign of Alex’s commitment was his investment in a moped to make the ten-mile journey from his home to the office come rain or shine.
Alex attends the College of West Anglia on a day-release basis where he is studying towards a raft of C&G qualifications. Tutors have said that Alex has been "a truly inspiring apprentice", producing high standards and written work indicating the potential to gain great results.
Alex’s on-the-job training is taking place on challenging industrial and utility sites with significant health, safety and environmental risks and responsibilities.
He has worked on a long-term project at a local chemical works, as well as numerous water and sewage sites, BT telephone exchanges and a Victorian swing bridge.
Alex also spends time in the panel shop where he has quickly acquired the practical skills necessary to assemble, wire and test telemetry panels.
The competition was judged by a panel which included John Kavanagh, Dodd Group’s managing director who said: “It is the likes of Alex that represent the future of our industry. The national skills shortage is well documented but we believe that by encouraging such pro-active people as Alex into the industry we can protect our business.
"He should be proud of his achievement as the standard of entries this year was particularly high.”
Alex's award presentation was made extra memorable as he passed his driving test the same day.
