Man, 19, in court after 70mph police chase in Hunstanton

A man has admitted driving dangerously in West Norfolk.

Ryan Briggs, 19, had driven away from police after being stopped in Lighthouse Lane, Hunstanton.

Lynn Magistrates’ Court was told yesterday that Briggs gave false details when he was initially stopped – those of his passenger who was the owner of the VW Polo.

When police suggested they could smell cannabis coming from the car, Briggs drove off. An officer had his hand on the open window at the time.

A pursuit began with Briggs doing 70mph in a 30mph speed limit at one point, driving on the wrong side of the road and almost colliding with other road users.

A stinger was used to bring the Polo to a stop. Cannabis and a knife were found in the vehicle.

Briggs, of Rowan Close, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop for a police officer, having no insurance, diving otherwise in accordance with a licence, and possessing three grams of cannabis.

All the offences occurred on November 3, 2020.

He pleaded not guilty to possessing a knife blade on the same date.

The case was adjourned until June 24 and Briggs was given an interim driving ban. He was granted unconditional bail to the next hearing.
