West Norfolk mayor Paul Bland reflects on a busy year during Christmas video message

West Norfolk mayor Paul Bland has expressed thanks in a special Christmas video message and reflected on a busy year.

Cllr Bland, who took on his civic role in May, recorded his seasonal message at Lynn Town Hall.

During the message, Cllr Bland thanked emergency services for their hard work throughout the year and mentioned the two charities he has chosen to support in his year as mayor, Trues Yard Fisherfolk Museum and King’s Lynn Sea Cadets.

Cllr Bland said in his message: “At this time of the year, it’s always good to reflect on the past 12 months and everything that has happened in that time.

“It is also a time to think about family and friends to catch up with them and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

“I began my term as Borough Mayor in May and I am now delighted to be part of our long and rich local history, to represent the Borough Council at events and engagements supported by my wife Marion as Mayoress and my Deputy Mayor Councillor Andy Bullen and his consort Jane Jestice – from visits to schools and youth groups to businesses and organisations all of whom are doing some great things in our Borough to make it a better place to work and live.

“My Mayor’s charities for my year in office are the Trues Yard Fishing Museum and King’s Lynn Sea Cadets, both of which are long established as important parts of our community.

“I have met staff and volunteers and have seen and heard first-hand how they have made a difference.

“The work that these charities carry out, along with the other charities show us the importance that having dedicated staff and volunteers can make in supporting our Borough, and I am very grateful to you all - you really do make a difference.

“I would like to thank all those at our Council and those beyond who all work throughout the year to make West Norfolk a pleasant and safe place to live, work and visit.

“The summer saw a successful program of free events in the Borough, ranging from the D-Day 80 commemorations, to live music, and to the ever more successful Heritage Open Day in September where our rich treasures are fully on display, bringing thousands to the area.

“Also, although it is now winter, we must not forget our award-winning Parks & Gardens staff who rightly won accolades for their work in our wonderful public spaces.

“We must especially, at this time of the year, take time to thank our emergency services, health workers, support staff and volunteers who will be working over this holiday period.

“Christmas is a joyful time to be with friends and family and, most of all, for children and it is a time to reflect on the Christian message of the birth of Christ.

“Whatever your religious or spiritual outlook, I wish you all peace and happiness this festive season and a happy and healthy New Year.”
