New food waste collection service for businesses through Breckland Council

A new food waste collection service for businesses is now live, providing them with a practical and cost-effective solution to meet recycling regulations.

Under the new 'Simpler Recycling' legislation from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), businesses with ten or more full-time equivalent employees must separate their food, recycling and general waste.

Breckland Council’s business waste collection service now offers tailored food waste disposal services alongside its established waste and recycling collection options, helping businesses stay compliant with the new requirements.

This will help companies in towns such as Swaffham.

Cllr Helen Crane, executive member for waste at Breckland Council, said: “With our new food waste collection service now in operation, businesses across Breckland have an easy and effective way to comply with the new legislation.

“Separating food waste is a simple step that can make a big difference by reducing waste, cutting emissions, and supporting a more sustainable community.

“Our expert team is on hand to provide guidance and bespoke waste collection solutions to help businesses adapt smoothly.”

The new service offers flexible options, including a range of bin sizes and collection schedules designed to meet the specific needs of different businesses.

As a VAT-free service, it provides an affordable alternative to private waste collection companies, making the council service a particularly accessible option for small businesses.

Already trusted by more than 400 local businesses, takeaways, schools, and organisations, the service ensures reliable and compliant waste management solutions tailored to the community’s needs.

While the council is working towards household food waste collections in 2026, this new service is currently only available to businesses.
