Motorists were surprised to see a dog charging across a busy road near Swaffham at lunchtime on Sunday.
Norfolk Police said they were called to the A47 at 12.45pm to reports of a German Shepherd running on the road, which was causing disruption.
The police assisted with traffic to ensure drivers could pass.
A spokeswoman said the incident took place two miles to the east of Narborough.
Witness Julie Bremner said: "Some people stopped as if they were going to grab the dog. But it was huge and really fast.
"I was there about 10 minutes, driving slowly [along] with other cars."
She added that the dog ran off to the south of the road, and she was not aware of it being recovered by anyone.
