From the Newsroom: King’s Lynn has the worst drivers I have ever seen
Having travelled to towns and cities all over the country, I can safely say that nowhere I’ve been has quite as many bad drivers as Lynn.
In Scotland, I was a regular on the roads of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. Since moving to England, I have been behind the wheel in the likes of Manchester, York and Newcastle.
However, Lynn – and West Norfolk as a whole, to be honest – takes the cake. The sheer volume of ridiculous manoeuvres is baffling at times.
It’s no wonder there are so many crashes around this area – many of them serious.
I normally try to take bad driving with a pinch of salt. I hate it, but you’re never going to be able to stop it.
No matter how many horror stories people hear, they will still feel the unnecessary urge to make that overtake or cut across a lane.
But just this weekend, the number of frustrating examples I witnessed just about tipped me over the edge.
I drive a lot on Saturdays and Sundays, frequenting the Hardwick roundabout, the Southgates roundabout, and main roads such as the A17, A10 and A47.
The Hardwick area is an accident hotspot, helped in no small part by the masses of people who cut lanes and run red lights.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve had to slam my brakes in anticipation of a driver next to me doing something idiotic, and nine out of ten times I’m been correct. If your reactions are having an off-day, you’re in big bother.
On the A10 heading from West Winch back into Lynn, I’ve had to sharply brake as someone attempted a daring (and pointless) overtake in my direction.
They could obviously see me coming – it’s a straight road. Why risk it to cut your journey time by a mere couple of seconds?
Late on Sunday night, as I was heading through the Southgates roundabout, an approaching driver came to a sudden halt after seeing me.
It was clear they had been about to drive straight through a red light – and as expected, as soon as I had passed, they shot straight through it anyway.
I will never comprehend why people opt to drive like this. It dumbfounds me.
If you’re an adrenaline junkie, go and race around a go-kart track until your heart is content. Stop putting other road users at risk.
Unfortunately, most people will never learn until it’s too late.
