Partially blind man Jamm’in Joe to play keyboard for 12 hours straight in charity event at The Terrace, Hunstanton

A partially blind man is raising money for the visually impaired with an all-day sponsored music event.

Joseph Smith, better known as Jamm’in Joe, will be playing the keyboard for 12 hours straight at the Jam Around The Clock charity event, which is being held at The Terrace restaurant in Hunstanton, from 9am to 9pm on Sunday, January 14.

Proceeds will go to the Royal National Institute of Blind People and The Amber Trust, which provides musical opportunities for blind and partially sighted children, as well as children with more complex needs, through its Music Awards and Music Services.

Joe was born with cataracts in both eyes as a result of his mother contracting German Measles in the 60s while pregnant with him.

From the ages of one to five, he had 11 operations to try and fix his sight and now at the age of 59, he is completely blind in one eye and has 50% of his vision in the other – so his chosen charities are very close to his heart.

However, his lack of vision has not stopped him from pursuing his musical talents as Joe spends his time giving back to charity with various musical events and Jam Around The Clock will be no different.

The day will start with Joe's Jazz Breakfast from 9am to 11am, followed by two sittings for a Soulful Sunday Roast from 12.30pm to 2.30pm and again from 3pm to 5pm, then ending with the grand finale of Toe Tapping Tapas.

Aiming to raise £2,000, Joe said: “It’s nice to be able to give something back, as you get older you realise what’s important, and to me, being able to help is one of those.

“The work that The Amber Trust does is just brilliant, if someone had taken the time to help me learn music when I was younger it would have changed everything.”

A common question that the musician asks people is: ‘If you had to choose between losing your hearing and using your vision, which would you choose?’

He explained that most people answer with losing their hearing, but he would still choose to lose his sight if he had to as music means everything to him.

On their website, The Terrace has said: “We will be donating 20% of all our profits from the day, all corkage fees and our staff have pledged their tips.”
