New QD store opened in Hunstanton by mayor Michael Ruston

The doors at a new town discount store were officially thrown open to the public today.

Cllr Michael Ruston, the mayor of Hunstanton, was in attendance at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new QD store on High Street this morning.

Located in the former M&Co premises, the shop will offer the likes of home, gardening, clothing, furniture and pet products – as well as groceries.

Staff have undertaken a full refit to transform the 6,500 square foot sales area, including the installation of new LED lighting throughout, which they say will reduce the store’s energy use by more than 60%.

The store has also been given a lick of paint with QD’s trademark bright red branding.

Sidney, the mascot from the Searles holiday park, popped down to assist the mayor and welcome shoppers. The first 100 customers in the store this morning also received a goody bag.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cllr Ruston said: “Excitement has been building over the past weeks in advance of QD’s arrival here in Hunstanton and it was a pleasure for me to officially open the store today.

“Everyone knows it's been a tough few years for high street retailers, so we’re delighted to welcome QD to Hunstanton, with the 19 new jobs they have created being especially well received.”

Chris Meale, store operations manager at QD, added: “We are delighted to now be officially open in Hunstanton and it was an honour to have Cllr Ruston cut the ribbon for us.

“The welcome we have received from the town has been fantastic and it’s been lovely to meet so many customers today. This is a great location for our new store and we’re so excited to bring our value guaranteed promise and excellent quality products at amazing prices to Hunstanton.

“Our shelves are fully stocked with so many great value ranges – we’re looking forward to showing Hunstanton what QD has to offer.”

QD bosses have subsequently made a donation to Cllr Ruston’s chosen charity, the East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), which offers care and support for children with life-threatening conditions and their families.
