The act was captured on CCTV images and Nash was identified and charged on May 26.

But the court was told that Nash had been was sentenced to four months in prison two days later for nine counts of shop theft.

Claire Edgeler, mitigating, queried why the B&M offence was not dealt with at the same time.

She said: “Mr Nash was already in custody when police realised he was the chap they wanted for this offence on May 14th.

“Why they didn’t add this on, or use taken into consideration, I have no idea.

“Had your colleagues in court on May 28th known about this matter for £30, would it have made any difference [to sentencing]? Of course it wouldn’t.”

Nash, of Edinburgh Drive, Wisbech, was given one day in custody, to run concurrently with his current prison term.

He was ordered to pay £30 compensation.
