Public meeting to be held on fire-wrecked Wimbotsham church

Villagers will meet tomorrow to discuss the future of Wimbotsham’s medieval church which was left devastated by a fire last week.

St Mary’s Church, which was built in 1175, was gutted by flames after the blaze which was first reported at about 6am on Wednesday.

A community meeting, which will give an update on the condition of the building, is to be held at the village hall at 3pm tomorrow, which everyone is welcome to attend.

According to a poster, the meeting has been organised as “the church council feels it would be a good idea to get together for an information and update session on the condition of the building and attempt to outline the next steps”.

Last week, officials from the Diocese of Ely said it would be “so difficult” to say how long the building would take to rebuild.

Geoffrey Hunter, head of church buildings, told the Lynn News: “How that building will be used in the future is a chance to look at using it for other things we would not have thought of before.”

Important historic documents were saved, but the damage to the nave and the roof was significant.

The cause of the fire still remains unknown at this stage. Yesterday, a Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said an investigation is ongoing.
