Storm fails to stop Downham Market Christmas events
“Downham Market you did us proud” - was the message from the organisers of the town’s Christmas celebrations as Storm Bert failed to put a stop to Sunday’s event.
Despite many events being cancelled due to the wind with gusts predicted at around 60 to 70 mph, Santa was still able to get to the town and the festive switch-
on event went ahead.
The town council posted updated information on social media during the day, with wind speeds being checked every 15 minutes, and the message was given “we are comfortable that the event is safe to run”.
In advance of the event the decision was made to move outdoor stalls into the town hall and crowds turned out to support the festivities.
Santa switched on the festive lights helped by youngsters Rhys Weston and Robyn Williams.
Following the successful event the town council posted on Facebook: “Downham Market you did us proud. Thank you for supporting us and coming out to share the 2024 switch on.”
The post said “crowds were just as big as always” and “thank you to all the traders and stallholders who trusted us and still attended”.
The post continued: “The weather was not as forecast in Downham Market. Wind speeds at their maximum were 20.9 mph and that was caused by a gust.
“Thank you to the schools who sang for our community. This is always a special experience.
“Robyn and Rhys were absolute stars and shined bright at the time of the switch on.
“It was amazing to have the support of Terry Jermy MP and deputy mayor of the borough council, Andy Bullen.
“Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make this a successful event.”
