Review of Blue’s Restaurant and Bar in Wisbech: Great service, yummy food but with relatively high price tag

With it being Valentine's Day, I thought it would be a great opportunity to venture out and see what a nearby restaurant had to offer.

My partner Brandon and I have had an eye on The Blue’s Restaurant and Bar in Wisbech for a while, so we decided to give it a try and see if the food lives up to people's comments.

I booked a table for Friday evening at 6pm and, on our arrival, we were greeted by a very friendly waiter who showed us to our table – there were only around three other tables taken, which surprised me. Inside the restaurant was very clean and it had a nice cosy feeling throughout.

We were handed a set menu which we were not aware of but which included three courses and a bottle of wine for £50 per head. Neither of us are big drinkers, so we swapped the bottle of wine for two soft drinks each.

The waiter was very swift and did not leave us waiting, taking our drink and food order once were were ready. We both just went for a basic Coke.

For our food, the only starter that appealed to us was the barbecue pork belly bites so we both decided to go for that.

For the mains, I was drawn to the pan-cooked salmon which was served with crushed new potatoes, vegetables and lemon and dill sauce. If it was not Valentine's Day and it was a normal menu it would have been £24.95.

Brandon chose his favourite food – sirloin steak with all the trimmings which included coleslaw, salad, chips, onion rings, corn on the cob, a mushroom and vine tomatoes. This would have also cost £24.95.

As we are both chocolate lovers, we decided to go for the rockslide brownie for the dessert which the waiter recommended. It was served with ice cream raspberries and strawberries. This would have been £7.95 if it was not part of the set menu.

Our starters came out quite quickly, and the dish was presented nicely, however, we both thought it looked like a small portion. I quite enjoyed it and thought the little pork bites were very tasty and not dry at all. Brandon enjoyed his as well but thought it lacked in size.

After our starter dishes were taken, we didn't have to wait too long for our mains.

The dishes were presented well. Brandon’s portion size was quite reasonable, however, I was not overly impressed with the size of my dish for £24.95.

Brandon really enjoyed his steak and said it was cooked exactly how he likes it – medium rare. He said the meat was very juicy and the onion rings were not oily like they can be. However, he was not a big fan of the chips – he said they were too crispy and tasted a little oily, but other than that he quite enjoyed it.

Despite the portion size of mine, I did enjoy it very much and thought the potatoes were crispy and fluffy while the salmon was nice and moist with the added extra flavour of the sauce that I have never had before.

Once we had finished, the waiter soon brought out our dessert. Although we were fairly full, we gave them a good go.

When they came out, they looked great on the plates and we just wanted to tuck straight in.

The dessert featured chunks of brownies and walnuts on the top. Although I quite enjoyed it, I thought the nuts ruined it a little bit as you could taste them more than the actual brownie itself. It would have been better with fewer nuts – Brandon agreed with me. I don’t think it was quite worth almost £8.

Our bill came to a total of £100, for two starters, two mains, two desserts and four Cokes, which we felt was a bit on the pricey side.

Overall, we would recommend Blue’s to others as the food was quite nice but, considering the price, maybe it’s the kind of place you would visit for a special occasion. I would be intrigued to return again to see what the restaurant has to offer on its normal day-to-day menu.

Ratings out of five:

Food: There was a limited range of food on the set menu to choose from but it looks like there is more of a range on the usual menu. It was quite nice with only a couple of criticisms. ***

Drinks: We were not terribly ambitious but there was a decent variety. ****

Decor: The decor was simple throughout which fitted the theme of the restaurant. ****

Staff: The staff were polite and very friendly. *****

Price: I think the price was quite expensive for the portion sizes but it was a special occasion. ***
