Review of The Cave in Downham Market: A tasty Mediterranean cuisine experience
As someone who loves good food and nice restaurants, I wanted to try somewhere that I have not yet been to for my next food review.
After having it recommended to me and seeing photos of the food on offer at a restaurant specialising in Mediterranean cuisine in Downham, I snapped up the opportunity and booked a table at The Cave for my partner and I, with quite high expectations.
As we walked in, our first impressions were good. The atmosphere felt quite relaxed and welcoming, with cool lighting and a nice themed décor throughout, and a bar to the right of the door.
My partner Brandon and I were greeted straight away by the friendly staff and were immediately shown to one of the many tables available.
We visited on a Saturday night at 7.30pm, it was not overly busy to start with but after a little while, more people started to arrive, including a couple of larger groups.
We were quickly asked what drinks we required while we decided on our food. There were a good range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages to offer.
I had a coke (£3.10) and Brandon had still water (£2.60), which I did think was a little bit pricey.
Moving on to food, for starters we chose grilled halloumi cheese (£6.95) and creamy garlic cheesy mushrooms (£7.50) to share between us. There were 13 dishes to choose from on both the cold and hot starter sections of the menu.
The starters came out accompanied by a bowl of complimentary tomato and herb bread and dips, which were all well presented. We both thoroughly enjoyed the starters and said how tasty they were.
Once we had finished the starters, our plates were cleared and our mains brought out quickly afterwards.
I had chosen the chicken beyti (£16.95) and Brandon picked chicken grill kofte (£16.95). There was a good range of mains, including grills, house specials, fish, Scotch beef steak and burgers, plus vegetarian dishes.
These were presented nicely on both plates with a side of salad next to the chicken and a dome of rice.
We both enjoyed our meals, there were lots of lovely flavours from the chicken and the salad dressing. We both said our food tasted just like a quality kebab.
Overall, the food was tasty and the staff were really friendly so I would recommend it, but we both said that it would probably not be on the top of our list to go back to, as we personally prefer more restaurant-style food with a bigger range of dishes.
The restaurant is open everyday from noon - 11pm.
Ratings out of five:
Food: Presented nicely and very tasty with lots of flavour. ****
Drink: We just had coke and water, nothing too exciting but can't go wrong and a good variety on the menu. ***
Staff: The staff were very friendly and efficient. ****
Decor: The interior seemed fresh and clean throughout the restaurant. ****
Price: Our bill came to £54.05 which I thought was reasonable. I just felt the starters were a little over-priced. ***
