Storm Dennis: trains to run at reduced speeds between King's Lynn and Cambridge for public safety

Storm Dennis has arrived on what has been a mixed day for businesses in West Norfolk today.

Great Northern has announced trains will be running at reduced speeds between Lynn and Cambridge from 6pm today until 2pm tomorrow (Sunday 16).

The rail service has stated this is for public safety, and travellers will have to allow more time for their journeys as delays are expected.

A spokesperson said: "There will be delays, so you will need to allow more time for your journey, especially if you are travelling to an airport or plan to connect with long distance rail services. If your journey is not necessary then it's safest not to travel at all.

"Amber and Yellow weather warnings of strong winds up to 70mph and heavy rain have been issued by the Met Office for large parts of the United Kingdom this weekend. The storm has been named by the Met Office as Storm Dennis.

"As a result of this, services across the whole Great Northern and Thameslink network may be delayed."

An early decision was made by officials this morning to call off King's Lynn Town Football Club's home fixture against Bradford Park Avenue.

While they committed to that decision in the interests of public health and safety, King's Lynn parkrun went ahead as usual with plenty of runners braving the windy conditions in the Walks. The historic Mart has also been largely unaffected by Storm Dennis so far.

It was also business as usual for traders in Swaffham Market Place, although numbers were slightly down according to town council clerk Richard Bishop.

Posting on social media, Mr Bishop said: "Great to see Swaffham Market setting up this morning despite Storm Dennis.

"A few stalls less than normal and no auction this week but finding a way to trade in its 805th year."

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning advising people to be prepared to secure loose objects such as garden furniture, close and fasten windows and doors, as well as checking before travelling.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds until 12 noon tomorrow (Sunday).

Storm Dennis has already claimed one victim in the country. A body was recovered off the Kent coast this afternoon following a major air-sea search launched earlier this morning when a man was reported missing from a petrol tanker near Margate.

A spokesman for the coastguard confirmed this afternoon: "At around 1pm, after many hours of searching, a body was sadly found in the water by the RNLI Margate lifeboat and was brought to shore."

Back in West Norfolk, King's Lynn Town FC chairman Stephen Cleeve has reassured supporters who had purchased tickets for the postponed fixture at The Walks today.

Mr Cleeve said purchased tickets will be valid for the re-arranged fixture which has yet to be confirmed.

Posting on social media, he continued: "If you cannot make the re-arranged fixture which will be agreed by Monday then please email Zoe [Sandle] if you want a refund or feel free to donate to the groundsman’s pitch fund."

Zoe Sandle is the club's box office manager who can be contacted at zoe.sandle@kltown.co.uk.
