Three Dads Walking – including Shouldham’s Tim Owen – nominated for Peititioner of the Year award by MPs

Three dads who have tirelessly been campaigning for suicide prevention to be part of the national curriculum after losing their daughters have now been nominated by MPs for the Petitioner of the Year award.

The Petitions Committee, a cross-party group of MPs, nominated the Three Dads Walking group for the award after they started their petition in 2022, gaining more than 100,000 signatures. Shouldham man Tim Owen is a part of the group.

The news comes shortly after Tim, Mike and Andy announced that they will be doing their third charity walk in spring in aid of PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.

The Three Dads Walking said: “We are delighted that our campaign to make suicide prevention a compulsory part of the school curriculum has been nominated in the Petition Campaign of the Year Award.

“The petition played a key part in our campaign, it was the central theme of our walk in 2022 and ultimately led to a debate in Parliament, a meeting with the Prime Minister, and an invitation from the Secretary of State for Education to work with the DfE on the RSHE curriculum review.

“Without the petition and the support of the Petitions Committee we wouldn’t be on the brink of achieving our aim - to save lives by having suicide prevention included in the school curriculum.”

Cat Smith MP, the chair of the Petitions Committee, said: “As chair of the Petitions Committee, I have seen first-hand the incredible campaigning of these three groups of petitioners.

“The work that each of them put it into their campaigns, often beginning in times of grief, have led to positive changes across the country.

“I want to pay tribute to each of them and wish them luck.”
