U-turn over A149 average speed cameras?
A scheme to instal average speed cameras along the main route between Lynn and Hunstanton appears to have been ditched four months after they were expected to be put in.
Councillors at a recent meeting of Snettisham Parish Council were told the cameras would “not now be happening”.
They were told the decision was made after discussions with local representatives along the route showed the dangers areas were certain junctions, and not the speed.
That appears to be a complete U-turn as when the scheme was announced in March Norfolk highway engineer Andrew Wadsworth said: “The A149 north of Lynn was identified as having a high rate of personal injury collisions.
“The predominant collision types are those which may be associated with excessive speed, such as tail end, overtake and head on collisions.”
As a result an average speed camera system, to be funded by Norfolk’s Safety Camera Partnership, was drawn up with installation expected by May 2018.
However, a spokesman for the county council said only: “Councillors are keen for a range of safety schemes to be considered first so our network safety team are looking at the data to see if any particular sites would be eligible for inclusion in the local safety scheme programme next year.”
