Update: Arrest made after serious crash on A17

The A17 remains closed in both directions in the Sutton Bridge area following a collision between two cars and a lorry this morning.

Vehicles are now being recovered but the road will continued to be closed throughout rush hour.

Firefighters from Long Sutton, Spalding and Grantham attended the accident, on the Norfolk side of the Crosskeys Bridge, at 11.17am and crews used hydraulic cutting gear to release one female casualty.

She was taken to hospital along with another casualty. One suffered serious but not life threatening injuries and one suffered minor injuries.

A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possession of cannabis and is in custody.

The road is closed and traffic queueing both ways from Greenworld Park to Centenary Way. Motorists are still being asked to avoid the area. There is also congestion to surrounding routes through Wisbech, specifically the A1101 Sutton Road and the A47 towards King's Lynn as traffic looks to divert.

Investigation work has now been completed and recovery work is ongoing. Once complete, carriageway clean up will be carried out.

A statement from Lincolnshire Police this morning said: "Both lanes are currently blocked and the road is expected to be closed for some time. We are advising people to avoid the area if possible.

“Injuries are being assessed and we will update when we have more information.”

A social media post by Lincolnshire Police shortly before 3pm said people have been caught going through the closure signs and being turned back as a result.

The police dismissed "rumours" of the road being reopened shortly before 3pm this afternoon (Friday, March 29).

The post emphasised the road is still closed.
