Dersingham Post Office could return after closing its doors on Monday as three retailers interested in taking over
A village post office which closed this week could return soon as retailers have expressed an interest.
Some may have thought that the saga around saving Dersingham Post Office was over and that residents would be left without the services after it closed on Monday, but some positive news could be on the horizon.
The Post Office has said it has had interest from three different retailers willing to take over and, although it is still in the recruitment phase, hopes to have “good news to share about a replacement branch” soon.
Fraser Lindsay and his wife Maria had run the shop since 2001 but were forced to resign at the beginning of this year following a two-year battle to stay afloat.
The postmaster lost around half of his income on the spot after Royal Mail - a separate organisation to the Post Office - handed him a six-month notice to say they would be withdrawing mail workers from the shop and relocating them to Lynn and Hunstanton.
Various petitions and campaigns were launched to try and keep it open, but ultimately, Fraser and Maria’s final day was Monday.
“We want to sincerely thank Fraser Lindsay who has been the postmaster for Dersingham for 22 years until his recent resignation,” a Post Office spokesperson said.
“In the interim, alternative branches include South Wootton and Grimston.
“The postmaster for South Wootton has been very proactive with leaflets for Dersingham Post Office customers to highlight the range of services available at his branch until a replacement Post Office can open.”
Villagers have created a GoFundMe page to give a thank you and farewell to Fraser and Maria, which has already raised more than £1,000.
