Vintage-inspired calendar helps West Winch Friends give back to Macmillan

A vintage calendar is part of a village fundraising group’s efforts to give back to a charity which has helped them over the years.

West Winch Friends has released the 2020 calendar to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, ahead of a special fundraising day next Friday.

Group member Nicky Proctor, who has organised the fundraiser, said in a letter to those who have bought the calendar: “We are ordinary women, of all ages, sizes and shapes who have come together to raise money for a charity we feel passionately about.

“Cancer has affected all of us in one way or another and some, including myself, have had their own cancer battles.”

In 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and underwent a mastectomy, eight lots of chemotherapy, three weeks of radiotherapy and full breast reconstruction.

“I am grateful for all the care I received at the Queen Elizabeth, Norfolk & Norwich and Addenbrooke’s Hospital,” she said.

“This got me thinking, I’d like to give something back, so the West Winch Friends Fundraising for Macmillan Committee was formed.”

In September 2016, the group held a fundraiser day, which made more than £6,000 for the charity.

“This time we’ve added the calendar and with your help we hope to raise more,” Nicky added.

She thanked their photographer Ian Bridge, who created the calendar, along with others who had helped, plus their sponsors, including Boldero and Filby for the use of their salon and their help with hair and make-up.

“All proceeds raised will go to the Macmillan Care and Treatment Centre at the QEH,” she said.

West Winch Friends’ fundraising day for Macmillan takes place on Friday, September 27 – to coincide with the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, organised by Macmillan – at the William Burt Social Club from 8.30am to midnight.

The day will include cake sales, an auction, a hog roast, live music, and a number of games and activities.

The calendar, which costs £6, is available to buy from a number of businesses, including Boldero and Filby, Liquor and Loaded, Madeline Moments, Everybodies, Arbuckles, Downham Garden Centre, and Purfleet Studios, as well as next Friday at the fundraising day.
