Ryston's Charlie makes final competing down an age group

Teenage Ryston talent Charlie Wakefield competed an age group down in the Under-17 Southern Athletics Championships.

But this didn’t deter the youngster who produced some fine results over the two days.

There were three heats with the first two from each heat and the two fastest losers qualifying for the final.

Wakefield was in the first heat and had nothing to lose as he finished third in a time of 2.01.

This forced the next two heats to leg it and all of the qualifiers did, with Wakefield qualifying as first fastest loser.

He had to return to Lee Valley on the Sunday for the final where he finished sixth but third in his actual age group.

Wakefield got boxed at the bell and spent the second lap, after a slow opening lap, playing catch-up.

After a tough race, he crossed the line in 2.02 and surely it’s only a matter of time before he goes sub two-minutes.

He was delighted to see his name in lights on the electronic scoreboard.
