Charlie smashes 20-year Ryston record

Charlie Wakefield was in record-breaking form for Ryston Runners juniors in the Eastern Young Athletics League match at Peterborough.

Wakefield smashed the club's 800 metre record, which had stood for more than 20 years, as Ryston members represented the Team Norfolk composite team on Sunday.

There were also plenty of personal bests and some very impressive performances in new events.

Under-17 B athlete Wakefield, who has been performing well all season, took a massive four seconds off his 800m personal best, running a time of 2.01.7.

It saw him finish second in the race and break the club record. He also ran a new PB of 54.0 in the 400m, which was also good enough for second.

Charlie’s brother Harry (U15B) outdid his brother in terms of improving his PB, though, by taking a massive 11 seconds off his 800m to clock 2.30.6.

David MacQueen (U13B) leapt to a new long jump PB of 4.88 metres, which was good enough for victory, and was also placed second in both the 100m (13.1) and 200m (27.7).

His brother, Robert, (U17) sprinted to two third place finishes in the 100m (12.0 ) and 200m (24.0 ), his 200m being his fastest hand-timed race.

Lucy Oakley (U13G) won the shot putt with a throw of 9.08m and also tried the javelin for the first time where she finished second with an impressive throw of 20.48m.

She capped a memorable weekend by shaving 1.3 seconds off her 200m PB , reducing it to 31.0.

Also taking a big amount of time (3.8 sec) off his 200m time was Ryan Wood (U13) who ran 30.1 to win his race.

Mia Moore (U15) and Joe McNulty both ran new 300m PBs of 44.8 and 44.2 while Jay Liczbinski (U15) improved again in the sprint hurdles to finish third in a time of 13.2.

Liam Clare (U15) was second in the B-string hurdles and both Liczbinski and Clare tried their hand at the javelin, throwing 23.05m and 17.08m.

Jess Boxall (U17) ran 14.4 in the 100m as well as producing an impressive 200m, where she recorded a personal best with 28.7 secs.

Archie Bell performed well in the shot, discus and javelin.

Saffron Teasdale (U17) high-jumped 1.30m which was one height short of her PB.

Bell set a new discus personal best with a throw 33.64m which was god enough to win the B-string competition.

Elsewhere, Eamonn McCusker ran in the Huddersfield Marathon on Sunday and possibly wish he hadn't.

Self-styled as the UKs toughest race, it consisted of long steep climbs, long steep descents and, just occasionally, the odd flattish bit.

Having suffered from a cold/cough all week, McCusker took it very gently to clock 5.03.01, a P B by more than 40 minutes.

McCusker noted that there were no caution signs, no mile markers, and, on a two lap course (shared with a half marathon), there were few marshals on the first lap.

By the second lap, they had all disappeared leaving the runners to cross busy roads and to attempt to follow the course by tiny arrow signs.

As a result of this disorganisation the lead group got lost and added four miles to their route.
