CSKA Reserves stun champions in league opener
The new 2018/19 Lynn and District Sunday League football season kicked-off and, in what promises to be a close campaign, the three title favourites were all on the road in the opening fixtures.
Last season’s champions England’s Hope began with a difficult away trip to the ‘Cage’ at the Thomas Clarkson Academy against CSKA Reserves.
Despite having several players missing, England’s Hope still had a strong team out with new boys Matty Prudence and Harry Brundle both scoring on their debuts.
Michael Chow completed the scoring with a third.
CSKA Reserves, despite being two goals down, fought hard to gain a memorable win with a brace from Scott Drewery and additional goals from James Allen and Harry Griffen in a 4-3 home win.
Chilvers returned to action with a trip to Downham’s Memorial Field to play Southery ASA.
Despite efforts from Ryan Juby and John Tricks, Southery caused another opening-day shock with a late winner to earn the three points. Two goals from Simon Bird and another from Glenn Rossiter were enough for a 3-2 home success.
CSKA’s first team visited new league boys West Winch William Burt who probably have the youngest team in the league.
CSKA’s experience was evident as West Winch were unable to cause an upset, but instead found themselves on the receiving end of a 9-0 scoreline.
Toby Allen netted four, Keiran Hamilton three and both Tom Brazil and Jake Miller one apiece.
West Winch played some quality football and will be a great addition to the league this season.
Shouldham hosted West Lynn Athletic in what was expected to be a mid-table clash, but Shouldham continued their good form from last season.
They dominated this game with a fine team display, which contained some slick passing, speed and determination.
A hat-trick from Dan Murphy and goals from Adam Mason and Craig Hawkes were enough for a 5-0 home win.
West Lynn Athletic had their chances, but Shouldham were too good on the day.
The Woodman’s Cottage hosted a reformed March Saracens Sunday outfit. Woodman’s are expected to have a good season and won 5-1.
Goals came from Ant Walbridge, Mario Santos, Kai Scott-Henson, Kensey Carter and Ben Pearce.
Meanwhile, James Hazel replied for Saracens.
