Defender happy to pen two-year deal with King's Lynn Town
Aaron Jones says he did not have to “think twice” about signing for King’s Lynn Town after returning to the country from a spell in the United States.
The 24-year-old utility player finally put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal this week as the Linnets prepare for two games over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Lynn welcome St Neots to The Walks before renewing acquaintances against Lowestoft on Monday.
Jones said: “It’s a great feeling to finally get everything done.
“I spent a large chunk of pre-season with the club and it wasn’t a difficult decision for me to sign.
“It was a dream come true to sign a professional contract in the United States.
“I didn’t play as much as I would have liked to, which was one of the reasons for me coming back.
“I was hoping to get back into the Football League over the summer but that didn’t happen.
“Lynn gave me the opportunity and I think the club is a good fit .
“It’s a massive club in the south-east region and the likes of Cameron King and Cameron Norman have gone onto bigger and better things after having good seasons.
“Obviously I want to play as high as I can but the aim is to get promoted with Lynn and help them into the Conference.
“I can’t speak highly enough of the players and the coaching staff here, they’ve all been great.”
Originally from Yarmouth, Jones spent 10 years with Ipswich Town’s academy before playing in the college system in the USA, for both Georgia State Panthers and Clemson Tigers.
He was picked by Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union in the 2017 draft but only featured twice and played in the second-tier United Soccer League for Bethlehem Steel.
The former Blues’ youngster was completely focused on taking his chance in the team when the opportunity presented itself at Tamworth.
“It was frustrating watching us get beaten in
our first two games
from the bench and it was all about me taking my opportunity and proving that I deserved the shirt when the opportunity came along,” admitted Jones.
“There’s great competition throughout the club, which will only benefit
the squad as a whole during the season.
“I honestly couldn’t wait to get out there last Saturday and I wasn’t really nervous.
“I was more excited, if anything.”
Jones wasn’t a complete stranger when he arrived at the club, having played for the Blues against captain Michael Clunan during his Norwich City days.
And having taken his full debut in his stride, the Norwich-based full-back now wants to concentrate on helping the Linnets climb the Southern Central Premier Division table.
“We’ve got two tough games but want to put on a performance for our fans at home,” said Jones.
