Dersingham driver 'Captain Slow' is anything but that at banger meeting

Dersingham driver Sam Coote did anything but live up to his nickname of “Captain Slow” in the all Volvo unlimited banger meeting at Lynn on Saturday with a simply stunning display.

Things started off well for Coote with a heat win – his first-ever unlimited banger victory – before he reappeared to take a titanic battle with Norwich racer Ben Englestone in the meeting final.

Not content with that, he then delivered a cracking shot to the car of Danny Everitt in the Destruction Derby to earn himself an entertainer award as well in what was almost a faultless performance.

Coote has been a consistent performer in the sport for many years and is one of the many drivers who has a wonderful attitude to racing.

It was a great night of national banger racing with some great performances coming from the drivers who travelled from all over Europe to race.

Despite changing weather and track conditions there were several great displays.

It wasn't a great night for West Norfolk's two-litre stock car drivers.

Despite coming into the meeting in great form and with a fantastic record, neither Willie Skoyles or Lee Sampson could manage a top-ten finish all night with a combination of bad luck and mechanical gremlins taking their toll.

This Saturday, both Skoyles and Sampson will be back in action (5pm) for the final time before the World Final takes place in two weeks time.

Drivers will be looking for a confidence-boosting set of results as they prepare for the showpiece showdown.

The big event this Saturday though is the first F1 stock car World Championship semi-final where the top ten drivers will qualify for the World Final.

The top man in the sport, Stuart Smith, starts this one on pole position with Norfolk’s Matt Newson starting alongside.

Completing the action on Saturday are the F2 stock cars which will feature Rob and Scott Aldridge and 247 Richard Brown.

Racing also takes place on Sunday (1pm) when the 2L bangers, micro bangers, 1300 stock cars and junior bangers are in action.
