King's Lynn cycling starlets all make the podium

Four riders from Lynn Cycling Club's Go Ride section all made the podium at the Fenland Clarion’s Go-ride grasstrack races in Peterborough.

The conditions were hot and the sun-baked ground with straw coloured grass gave very little traction in the corners.

Lynn Cycling Club had a representative in the under-8, 10, 13 and 16 sections.

The first race for each category was a “scratch race” in which all riders start together and the objective is simply to be first over the finish line after a certain number of laps.

These were followed by elimination races where the last rider on each lap is eliminated until there are only three left who sprint to win on the last lap.

The final races were “Kieran races” where riders sprint for victory following a speed-controlled start behind a pacer.

Harry Smith was third in the under-8 section, Antoni Malyszka third in the under-10, Jacob Good second in the under-13 and Tue Rugg second in the under-16.

Meanwhile, the club's senior TT team were racing on the B1043 course where conditions were very hot and breezy.

Their times were: Kay Burgess 25.20, Steve Neill 21.57, Jorge Vieira 21.23.

The Wednesday night 11 TT course record was broken only after week later from a previous record.

Jorge Vieira said: "It was very windy and Grimston isn't an easy course, so I tried to concentrate on my position, keep myself low and narrow and make the correct choice on my wheels.

"I did use a trispoke on a front which was a good help because it's very stable with side and front wind. My previous best was 26.16 and I stopped the clock in 25:57.

Other results were: Steve Neill 26.22, James Senter 27.19, Ivan Carr 28.33, Myles Higby 28.56, Jamie Standen 29.42 , Kay Burgess 29.58, Ian Kidman 30.10, Simon Hardy 30.34, Ray Barnett 31.15, Trevor Marshall 32.05, Nicky Brown 32.34, Bethany and Florence Barnett (2up) 34.37, Sarah Hardy 37.55, Peter Barber 38.54, Pauline Sparrow 41.07, Maria Frary 42.06.

The course record was smashed by Matt Senter (TVV) in 24.30.

Meanwhile, Bethanny Barnett has pedalled her way through to the Youth Championship final.

Barnett took to the B1043 course in the eastern district qualifier for the Time Trial National Youth Championship.

A hot day, with a cross wind that always felt like you were riding against the wind wasn't ideal.

But the youngster still managed a personal best on her cyclocross bike, with a time of 27.50 helping her to third place overall

and qualification for the final in September.

Both Bethany and her sister were at Scarborough to get some sighting laps in for the Youth Circuit National Championship on the Sunday.

Racing first, Florence, back on her bike for only the second time in two months following injury, defied the odds to hold her own with the front bunch of riders.

She maintained her position on the climb before a final sprint saw her finish a fantastic fourth and on the podium.

Bethany was next out during the hottest part of the day, at 2pm.

She worked well, moving up the bunch, until a climb began to take its toll on competitors six laps of the hill later.

Bethany managed to stay in the group, which eventually paid off as she crossed the line in 25th place.

This is a great achievement in her first year as an under-16 and bodes well for a possible top-ten finish next year.
