King's Lynn golfers playing to honour memory of young woman tragically killed near Wisbech
A team of golfers from Lynn will be playing to honour the memory of a young woman as they chase glory in the Annodata Matchplay Tournament next week.
Lynn Golf Club’s five-man team fly out to Spain this weekend and will wear pink ribbons to remember the life of Grace Robinson, 20, in the finals at Barcelo Montecastillo Golf Resort.
Grace, from Wisbech St Mary, was tragically killed last month following a crash near Wisbech.
Her dad Mark Jennings – who has pulled out of the trip to Jerez de la Frontera – is part of the Lynn team that has come through seven rounds and seen off more than 500 other clubs to reach this stage.
Lynn will join teams from Leigh, Consett and District, and Romsey Golf Clubs at the showpiece event and team captain Mark Butt said: “We want to try to win it for Grace and her family of Mark, Karen and Grace’s son Tommy.
“We’ll be wearing pink ribbons in memory of her during the week and will be doing everything we can to try to bring that trophy back.”
Lynn triumphed 3-2 in a nip-and-tuck quarter-final clash against Muswell Hill which went down to the last hole on their home patch at Castle Rising last October.
Before that, the team accounted for Middleton II (home), Ely (home), Middleton I (away), Milbrook (home) and Sheringham (away) after receiving a bye in the first round.
Matthew Bowman remains the only unbeaten member in the squad, which will be made up of Mason Bernstein, Mark Butt (captain), Jason Wysoczanski and Andy Hudson.
“We’ve got a really good team spirit and we’ve only used seven players throughout the whole competition, whereas some teams have used a lot more,” said Butt.
“It has been a real team effort in terms of all the members, sponsors and the golf club as well.
“When we played here in the quarter-final we had a lot of people cheering us on, it was a bit like the Ryder Cup, and some of those people will be travelling to support us next week.
“It’s the club’s centenary year and with what has happened in the last few weeks it would be fantastic to win it, not just for the club but also for Mark.”
The team will have two practice rounds before the draw for semi-final takes place on Tuesday.
Both semi-finals will take place on Wednesday with the final being played on the Thursday.
All matches will be played at the at Barcelo Montecastillo Golf Resort – a former host of the Volvo Masters.
King's Lynn Golf Club has kindly made a donation to help with the cost of the flights, while a number of businesses have pledged their support to the team.
Marc Knights, from West Norfolk Electrical Engineering, has provided the shirts, Karl Swenson, from Control Components Anglia, has supplied tops, with Claus Neilson, from Qualitops, donating golf balls.
