Ryston youngsters enjoy a day to remember

Ryston youngsters Mia Moore and Oakley Took had a day to remember in the last Eastern Young Athletics League match of the season at Peterborough.

Representing Norfolk, they both came away with three personal bests from the three disciplines they participated in.

Moore (under-15 girls) was rewarded in the 300m for going off at a fast pace and showed great determination to pull away in the final straight to take the win, in a new PB time of 44.1 secs.

She also took 0.3 seconds off her 200m PB, running 28.6, and topped off a fine day with a PB of 6.60m in the shot putt.

Oakley's best event was in the under-13 boys sprint hurdles in which he managed a second place finish, dipping under 17 seconds for the first time with 16.6.

He then finished second in the B string Javelin with a three-metre personal best of 18.32 metres.

Like Moore, his final PB came in the shot with a throw of 5.10 metres.

David MacQueen (under-13) came away with two wins and one second place finish, winning the long jump and 200m with 4.41 metres and 27.5 seconds, and finishing second in the 100m with 13.3 seconds.

Lucy Oakley (U13 Girls) finished second in shot with 8.41m and threw a big PB in the javelin, improving her previous best by two metres, with a throw of 22.79m which was good enough for third.

In her final event she was just four centimetres short of her long jump PB with 3.68 metres.

Campbell Pick and Harry Wakefield, both under-15 boys, ran new PBs of 2.17.4 and 2.25.3 in the 800m, with Campbell taking the B string win.

Joe McNulty, also an under-15 B, ran 48.9 secs in the 300m.

Meanwhile, half-a-dozen Ryston athletes were among the 5000 finishers at the Run Norwich 10k event on Sunday.

Lorena Latisaite (264th) recorded the fastest time of all of them, finishing in 43.50 as 13th senior woman in a very high-quality field. Juliette Meek ran 49.02 for 689th, finishing 45 seconds and 138 places ahead of Kevin Farquhar (827th/49:47).

Julia Norman (W40) was 914th in 51.28, Jason Hawes (M45) 1919th in 56.48, and Wendy Farquhar (W50) 5092nd in 83.47.

On a family trip to New York, two promising youngsters on the Ryston scene, Ben and Oliver Foxwell, took part in the their first-ever running event on foreign tarmac, the Maine Lobster Festival 10k, and made their mark by finishing sixth and tenth in a field of more than 200.

Describing the event as "hot, humid, hilly and friendly," Ben ran 42.02 while his brother's time of 40.58 was good enough to win the M15-19 category.
